About the Episode

In this this week’s episode I had the honor of speaking with Les Alfred, a woman who is doing the much-appreciated work of amplifying the wisdom of Black women in the wellness space and building community where we can bring our vulnerable selves to heal and grow together.

Les is the founder of Balanced Black Girl, an online wellness community and podcast focused on health, wellness, and self-care from the perspectives of Black women. Together we talk about the self-development trap – this seemingly endless pursuit of things we can fix about ourselves – and Les shares learnings from her own self-love journey. We also discuss tips for learning from our subconscious and our memories and how to engage in healthy self-awareness inquiry so you can be real with yourself about who you are and where you really are in your journey.

Enjoy the lessons from this very observant woman who has made a habit out of observing what is and isn’t working in her life and then making choices to chart an intentional, better path for her future.

About Les

At the age of 20, Les began her personal wellness journey in hopes of finding inspiration and energy while working her first corporate job. In a desperate attempt to stop falling asleep at her desk, she tried to introduce some radical concepts: getting up to walk a little more, actually drinking water, and learning to cook her own food. Before she knew it, she started having more energy, was building strength, had more mental clarity, and was becoming more confident than she had been before. Thus, her love of wellness was born and she wanted to share it.

Les started my career in fitness as a personal trainer and fitness instructor in 2012, and launched her first blog The Balanced Berry in 2014 to share her love of fitness and nutrition with others. As a personal trainer and nutrition coach, she spent over five years helping women reach their wellness goals in a balanced, sustainable way.

After taking some time off from fitness in 2018, Les pivoted to create Balanced Black Girl to introduce her community to Black and brown women experts in health and wellness and create a comfortable place for accessible wellness conversations and connection. Now as a 200-hr YT, Les leads wellness conversations and creates mindfulness-focused content to help us all find our balance.
