In this episode I am joined by author, Registered Nurse, and Certified Health Coach Latorsha Peake. Latorsha hosts Iced Coffee and Self Care®, a podcast where she shares lessons learned from her own journey to prioritize self-care, plus challenges us to do the work to upgrade our own lives. Her experiences led her to write a book titled Iced Coffee and Self Care® in which she aims to help us move ourselves higher on our own to-do lists. Self-care is not only about spa treatments!
In the discussion we discussed how over time we have built up some emotional reflexes. Do you know what yours are? What have your mind and your emotions been trained to do based on the events you have experienced so far? This is a big reason why therapy helps a lot of people. Your responses and reactions feel so normal to you that you might not notice how a different response might serve you better. Getting more perspective on your life can help you see the opportunities to re-train your mind and responses towards showing up as the YOU that you’d like to be.
She also offered a simple message she and her husband discovered: that our “woosah” – our was to relax and unwind – are not the same as other people. Case in point, a manicure is a chore to me, it is not relaxing. I’m thinking about how the person handling my fingers is possibly about to draw blood for no reason. I’m much more inclined to feel myself met and release when I’m in a silly robe on my couch at home watching cartoons. The point is, your self-care can’t be copied from someone else. Get your own woosah! One that works for you.
