About the Episode

In this interview, Dr. Shelly Bhowmik shares with me about her journey to becoming a lifelong learner, a sharp contrast to her youth of striving for achievement and perfection. She recounts her steps to recovery after experiencing burnout so bad it motivated her to launch Platform Wellness, a practice dedicated to helping other people heal from burnout.  Her practice is based on the idea that mindset is medicine, a belief she came to after finding herself with dark thoughts at the edge of a subway platform.

Dr. Bhowmik’s search for perfection began as a way to overcome the messages she received from a society tainted by colorism. I found her reflection about how colorism shaped her self-image and the high-achieving perfectionist she became so relatable. She had to unlearn the message that she wasn’t enough. But when you are raised inside of an oppressive ideal like that, how do you get the perspective to even know you have something to unlearn?  The key to your freedom is likely inside of someone else’s story. There is power taking in more perspective, in relating to someone else’s struggle.

Check out this episode to learn how Shelly found the perspective and support she needed to get on the path to burnout recovery.
