In this solo episode, I reflect on two recent moments of introspection, both centered on being able to recognize the goodness that other people are sometimes offering us. One of these moments was a great conversation with a corporate team where I facilitate a Culture Forum (pssst…you can hire me for that by the way). The topic was extending grace in the workplace, particularly around DEI related efforts. I asked the question “What would receiving grace after you ‘mess up’ mean to you?” And it sparked a great conversation about the disconnect between privileged people’s expectations and harmed people’s capacity. Grace is essential, but I have to highlight that it’s not always going to look like what you’d prefer to receive. There are a lot of trust, compassion, and healing dynamics at play here. Progress isn’t perfect when we are trying to learn do better, but grace ain’t perfect either.
